A WOMAN high on ice who hit a cyclist with her car and left him with “horrific” injuries has been sentenced to six years in a Victorian jail.

Rebekah Stewart, 24, had been taking ice when she drove on to the wrong side of the road in Ballarat in March 2016, hitting cyclist Christian Ashby head on.

Judge Michael McInerney sentenced Stewart to six years in jail, with a minimum of four years, after she pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing injury and failing to stop at an accident.

Mr Ashby, a former triathlete, was on a training ride when he was hit head on by Stewart who was driving down the wrong side of the road. Thirty-six-year-old Mr Ashby was thrown from his bike and left with devastating injuries.

*A light sentence, i'd say.

Knowing Christian, his gait shows his pain, walking similar to how I do now, I can feel his pain with every step.

He is back at work as a podiatrist but that doesn't mean he'll keep it up. As I found out the hard way, like he will, injuries will worsen over time, visually he doesn't look that bad but he has tremendous internal injuries as well.

Her history of previous drink and drug driving, leaving the scene of accidents, etc. and this time hiding the car and then disappearing shows her callous uncaring nature. Drugs don't do that. A sick brain from a sick upbringing does that. 6 years? The 4 minimum... nothing will change her. Instead of being in rehab since she was caught, she should have been jailed, suffering cold turkey. IMO she should suffer mental anguish, and lots of it. More than she has escaped with so far. Much more.
